Can Gut Bacteria Change the Brain?

Independent gut–brain axis & probiotic research

Whether biological changes linked to alcohol and caffeine exposure can be used to identify gut microbes worth testing as possible modulators of the gut–brain axis — worked out through metabolomic comparison, a computational ranking pipeline, and now experimental validation back at the bench.

    A long list of possible probiotic species is not useful without a principled way to decide which ones deserve experimental attention first. This chapter is about building that filter.

An independent project exploring how computational tools can help compare candidate designs for personalized mRNA cancer vaccines — evaluating cancer-associated antigen sequences, comparing design options, and organizing candidates for later experimental testing.

    Assembling the team

    Started as an independent project, then brought in three other students from the district — split across literature review, sequence analysis, computational design, and experimental planning rather than everyone doing the same task.

A connected thread

Four Summers at USC

What started as a first summer holding a pipette turned into a multi-year run of projects at USC — mouse behaviour, machine learning on patient data, PK/PD modelling, alcohol and the liver — each one leaning on whatever the last one taught.
